Boat Construction Rules
Nuts, bolts, washers and staples are NOT allowed in hull construction. Boats may not exceed more than 1-inch of cardboard thickness, but may not be glued or attached to wood, plastic, fiberglass, etc.) You cannot wrap the entire boat with plastic, duct tape, or any similar tape or wrap. You should reinforce all seams and stress points with duct tape. This can be done before waterproofing.
What's the Best Shape for a cardboard boat?
A flat bottom boat is recommended. V-shaped bottoms are likely to tip over unless the V is very gentle. The lowest center of gravity is the most stable. Kneeling or standing will cause you to tip over.
How high should the sides of the boat be?
For height, allow about 18 inches for you to sit and paddle effectively without the edge of your boat blocking your arms. Figure about 30 inches maximum for 1 person, 48 inches for two people.
How to prevent a cardboard boat from sinking
To prevent a cardboard boat from sinking, focus on waterproofing and structural integrity. Waterproofing can be achieved with multiple coats of polyurethane or waterproof paint, and by sealing seams with duct tape. Add extra layers of cardboard, especially with corrugations running in different directions, will increase strength and buoyancy.
Cardboard Boat Race

Saturday, August 23rd.
Inspections at 1pm. Race at 2pm.
Calling all adventurers! Build a cardboard boat and race to victory!
- Teams: Form a crew of 2-6 participants.
- Boat Construction: Your vessel’s hull and superstructure must be made entirely of corrugated cardboard. Decorate with other materials, but remember they can’t aid in flotation or propulsion. Duct tape is the primary sealant, but we will also allow glue, caulk, latex paint, or varnish.
- The Race: Teams will navigate a designated course using paddles. Be prepared – some boats will make it to the finish line, while others may experience a spectacular (and safe!) sinking!
- Safety First: Safety precautions will be reviewed at a mandatory pre-race meeting.
- Awards: Prizes will be awarded for fastest times, most creative designs, and even the most dramatic sinking.
- Unleash your creativity and teamwork: Collaborate to design and construct a unique boat.
- Enjoy a fun, super gay event: Bring your friends for an event full of laughter and friendly competition.
- Registration: Pre-registration is requested for boat race participants.
- Check the rules: Ensure your boat adheres to the specific construction guidelines.
- Gather your supplies: Stock up on cardboard, duct tape, and any decorating materials you need. Remember, we have basic materials for those who need more or sign up last minute.
