The Bear Community at The Woods
The Bear community is prominent at The Woods throughout the entire camping season and is especially celebrated during our four Bears at The Woods weekends and our “Bear Week” celebration in mid-July!
Mission Statement
The Bear community plans, organizes and executes Bear themed activities and social events at The Woods Camping Resort by:
- Fostering a welcoming and inclusive community for bears, cubs, and their admirers, celebrating our shared identity and creating spaces for connection, support, and friendship.
- Celebrating the bear community in all its forms, promoting visibility, and organizing events that highlight our unique culture of body positivity and acceptance.
- Connecting the bear community with other communities within The Woods Campground through events and initiatives that promote camaraderie and fun.
Woods Bear Title Holder COmpetition
Each year during the Bears 3 weekend, a competition is held to determine the new Bear Titleholders (Mr. Woods Bear, Mr. Woods Cub & Mr. Woods Bear Daddy). Winners then represent The Woods Camping Resort.

What to expect on Bear Weekends
1. Social Connection & Belonging
-
Bears and those who appreciate them often face body image stereotypes even within LGBTQ+ spaces. The Woods Bear events create a place where bigger, hairier, older, or otherwise non-mainstream presentations are celebrated, not sidelined.
-
You’ll meet others with shared experiences which can reduce any feelings of isolation and build meaningful friendships or romantic connections.
2. Community Building
-
The Woods’ Bear events foster a sense of identity within the broader LGBTQ+ spectrum, strengthening solidarity.
-
The Woods’ Bear events have their own traditions and culture, which create a special community history and pride.
3. Self-Acceptance & Confidence
-
Seeing a wide range of body types, ages, and styles openly celebrated can be a powerful antidote to narrow beauty standards.
-
Woods guests often feel safer to express themselves authentically—whether that’s through fashion, flirting, or simply being out in public.
4. Fun, Entertainment, and Joy
-
Our parties, dances, contests (like “Mr. Woods Bear”), and themed gatherings give people a chance to relax and have fun.
-
It’s also a space where humor, camp, and flirtation can be shared without fear of judgment.
5. Networking & Resources
-
Many bear events include charity fundraisers and workshops which contribute to the betterment of all involved.
-
Local vendors often benefit from the attendance on Bear weekends— creating lasting relationships between The Woods and the LGBTQ+ community.
The Woods Bear Committee
The Bear culture at The Woods is vast and the events are numerous! We have a committee of dedicated members who organize and produce the events throughout the camping season. These members assure the basic fundamentals of the Bear culture are prominent in each event.
